GVA Board votes to increase immersion

On Wednesday, April 16th, the GVA Board of Trustees voted to increase immersion in grades K-2.  Beginning in school year 2008-2009, students in kindergarten will receive 100% immersion in the world language for the full day, while first and second graders will receive 80% immersion.  First and second grade will have a 90 minute reading block per day. The goal for the increase is to have students leave eighth grade at the advanced levels for Spanish and French, and at the pre-advanced, or intermediate levels in Mandarin.  Please see the new immersion chart under the "helpful links" section on the home page.

I am glad you are increasing the immersion. When we look at the graph - how does this translate for our kids who already started this year? Does this mean a 3rd grader in Mandarin will be intermediate-mid after 8th grade? Also- what are the current plans for High School? I know there were some long term goals- but where are we? I know we would hate for all of this language training to go to waste because there are no Chinese Immersion High School Programs.
