GVA TEACHER ACADEMY
The Global Village Teacher Academy is a free resource to support elementary and middle school immersion teachers in growing as instructors. Immersion is the most effective model for producing students with high levels of language proficiency and cultural understanding. However, immersion is also a very challenging model that requires masterful teaching of content and language objectives. Teachers must be familiar with state and language standards, instructional strategies for content and language, and formative and summative content and language assessments. The following videos and resources are provided as a way of supporting quality immersion instruction in the early elementary and middle school grades. Please enjoy increasing your knowledge as a teacher (and/or parent of an immersion student!) While these materials are free to the public, we ask that, if used in training or group settings, that credit be given to the Global Village Charter Collaborative.
"Making Meaning in the Immersion Classroom" is a 5 part video series developed to help immersion teachers understand the concept of
comprehensible input and to enable teachers to make input comprehensible
to students. Although developed with the immersion classroom in mind,
teachers in other types of language programs will find the concepts and
strategies applicable to their settings as well. Please click on each link below to view the series:
"Chinese Immersion: Lesson-planning in the Content-based Classroom" provides hands on professional development for K-12 immersion teachers on how to develop lesson plans that include both content and target language learning. Participants will follow three teachers planning life science lessons as they develop content and language objectives, write formative assessments and deliver the lesson in their classroom. Key concepts will be introduced such as developing standards based instruction and backwards design. Resources are provided as part of the modules and include ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, National Language Standards, sample Content Standards, articles, and a Lesson Planning Template.
