2011 GVA STARTALK TO RUN TWO SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAMS!

Global Village Academy has been awarded a STARTALK grant in the amount of $225,000 to be used to develop two separate language immersion teacher training programs one in Mandarin Chinese and the other in Russian along with a Mandarin Chinese student camp. STARTALK is a program of the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland. STARTALK’s overall mission is to increase the number of Americans learning, speaking, and teaching critical need foreign languages by offering creative and engaging summer learning experiences for students and innovative professional development for teachers.  In 2008 there were 2608 student participants and 1038 teacher participants. There were 81 programs in 44 states plus the District of Columbia.  Programs were focused on learners and teachers of Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Persian, and Urdu.  For more information on the STARTALK Grant visit www.startalk.umd.edu

The teacher language immersion training in Mandarin Chinese will take place June 6 - 24, 2011.
The teacher language immersion traing in Russian will take place June 6 - 17, 2011.

The Chinese immersion camp will run 9AM - 2PM June 20 - 24, 2011.  With the help of Science Matters the camp will incorporate science and technology through Mandarin Chinese language immersion instruction. The student fee is $50 for the week.  Registration is open to students entering K-6 grade. 


2011 Mandarin Curriculum Focus:  GVA STARTALK Mandarin Institute 2011 is a non-residential program providing training for Mandarin Language Immersion teachers in grades K-12 through a two week teacher program and one week practicum with novice to intermediate immersion students. The three week institute will enable current and aspiring Chinese immersion teachers to improve student proficiency in Chinese as s participance engage in cognitively enriching academic activities drawn from life science. Teachers will develop skills in planning for and implementing hands on instruction through reflective unit and lesson planning. Two strands are offered. Strand One: Novice Teachers is for aspiring to beginning teachers with three years or less experience. This strand will focus on standards based lesson planning, effective strategies, and assessment. Strand Two: Teacher Leaders is for teachers with four years or more experience, including at least one year in an immersion setting or in a STARTALK program. Strand two will focus on developing teachers who can serve as immersion and content coaches and leaders for Chinese programs. Special emphasis will be placed on research and practice in supporting the teaching of Chinese literacy.

2011 Russian Curriculum Focus:  GVA STARTALK Russian Institute 2011 is a non-residential program providing training for aspiring, novice and experienced Russian Language Immersion teachers in grades K-12 through a two week teacher program that includes a three day practicum with novice to intermediate language students. The two week institute will enable current and aspiring Russian immersion teachers to improve student proficiency in Russian as students participate in highly engaging, cognitively enriching academic activities drawn from life science. Teachers will develop skills in planning for and implementing hands on instruction through reflective unit and lesson planning. Topics include standards based immersion lesson planning, using effective immersion strategies for comprehensible in-put and out-put, and summative and formative assessment in the immersion classroom. Special emphasis will be placed on research and practice in supporting the teaching of Russian literacy.
