For the second year Global Village Academy has been awarded a STARTALK grant! This year's amount of $100,000 will be used to develop a two week a teacher language immersion professional devolpment program and a week long student summer camp. STARTALK is a program of the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland. STARTALK’s overall mission is to increase the number of Americans learning, speaking, and teaching critical need foreign languages by offering creative and engaging summer learning experiences for students (K-16) and innovative professional development. In 2008 there were 2608 student participants and 1038 teacher participants.There were 81 programs in 44 states plus the District of Columbia.Programs were focused on learners and teachers of Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Persian, and Urdu. The teacher language immersion professional develpment will take place June 7 - 18, 2010.
The Chinese immersion camp will run 9AM - 2PM June 21 - 25 and with the help of Science Matters and Mr. McNicholas, GVA 7th grade math teacher, the camp will incorporate science and math instruction. The student fee is $30 for the week. Registration is open to students entering K-6 grade. Both the registration application and parent consent form are required for enrollment.
2010 Curriculum Focus: Leonardo’s Toy Chest: Many of Leonardo da Vinci's great inventions were scientific marvels...and make excellent toys. Fill your toy box with wooden creations of your own. Half the session will be filled with clockwork cars, attacking a castle with your own catapult, creating a camera obscura, and showing your artistic side while making a revolving stage--all while guided by Chinese-speaking camp teachers. Other inventions include the improvised car, creating a pinball machine, designing a robot drum, and racing a paddlewheel boat. You'll explore the mind of one of the world's greatest people - Leonardo da Vinci while integrating math into science!
